A goal many have when creating online courses is to maximize engagement and interaction – assessments and knowledge checks are great ways of achieving this and both SCORM and Brightspace quizzes are two of the many tools that are commonly used to create these experiences. There are some considerations to be made when using SCORM for quizzes. This article looks at the considerations when specifically using SCORM for quizzes – if you are interested in the general considerations when using SCORM vs HTML content, visit the Building HTML pages vs. SCORM Content in Brightspace topic. Extensive Settings When creating a quiz in Brightspace, you have a lot of settings to create the experience you want for your learners. A lot of SCORM authoring tools will not include all the below options so if any of the below are important – make sure you can set them up in the SCORM package otherwise it may be better using Brightspace quizzes: Add time or attempt restrictions to the quiz Add Special Access or Accommodation options for individuals Customise Feedback and Post Quiz ScreensMore Granular Reporting When using quizzes in SCORM, you are only able to report on overall grade and completion. However, Brightspace quizzes provide extensive reports on not only users’ performance (against the whole quiz and also individual questions) but also the performance of the questions themselves. Reusing and Updating One of the strengths of the quizzing tool is the ability to easily share and reuse both quizzes and quiz questions either within a course or across different courses. It is also easier to change or update either the settings to your quiz or the questions inside. It can all be done within Brightspace without the need to reauthor and reupload a package. Better Interaction with Other Tools One of the strengths of the quizzing tool is the synergy it has with other tools within the system. While SCORM can be used alongside Grades, Awards and other basic tools, there a lot of powerful tools that can’t be connected to SCORM quizzes – including Outcomes, Accommodations, and various Release Conditions.
