The lists provided here in the Create assignments and assess submissions only specify which file types can be viewed by the document viewer or annotated with the annotations tools but I'm sure that there are still other file types that could be uploaded to the assignments tool.

    Hi @Ron Will

    Stephanie from Support here! I have looked into this request. The file types listed are the only ones compatible with the Assignments tool. The Summary of the article does indicate "In Brightspace Learning Environment (LE), using the Assignments tool as a Student, what file types are supported?"

    I am going to reach out to the Knowledge Team to request they update the wording as it does give the impression that there are other file types that can be used. All the file types listed are the only file types compatible.

    Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Stephanie

    Thank you for the response and clarification, @Stephanie Scherk . To follow-up, we have students in computer science courses who are submitting files in the format .jar, for example, to their teachers for grading. In this case should we be instructing students to package these files in a certain way (i.e. zipped folders) to ensure that they can be uploaded?

    If so, can additional instructions be provided in the article for submitting unsupported file types?

    @Ron Will

    Here is some information I was able to gather.

    File extensions are often referred to as "MIME types". In October 2020, there was a new security update that restricted a few additional file types (including the .jar files) from being uploaded to Brightspace. If one of these file types is required, adding it to a .zip file would be the way to get it submitted to an assignment.

    Here is the KB that explains the different restricted MIME Types: Types: https://documentation.brightspace.com/EN/brightspace/requirements/all/restricted_mime_types.htm

    Here is the KB that highlights the change from October that introduced a few new restrictions: https://community.brightspace.com/s/article/Brightspace-File-types-added-to-restricted-upload-list-New

    I hope this helps! Have a great weekend.

    Stephanie

    This is fantastic, @Stephanie Scherk! Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for all of your work to gather this information for me.

    After you sent that documentation link I noticed that there wasn't an option to "follow" that page in order to be notified when there are updates, so I found this article on the Community which I was able to follow and will ne notified when an update is published: Brightspace Platform Requirements. The document in that article lists the restricted MIME types as well.
